Common Reasons Why Door Locks Break

Are Any of These Familiar?

Door locks are great when they are working properly but can be very frustrating and hard to deal with when they are not. In fact, when they are working great we hardly notice their benefits but when they break we immediately want them to be fixed. Here are some things that could be wrong with your door lock along with some potential problems and the proper solutions.

Your Lock Has Seized Completely

This problem is quick to discover because when you put your key in the lock it just wont turn the lock. Some common reasons why this happens is because of debris or dirt that could be stuck in the lock mechanism.

The solution to this problem could be quite simple. You can try to extract some of the dirt by using a q-tip that is damp and wiggle it in the lock. After you have gotten the dirt out you will need to lube it up. Do not use oil but instead use graphite. *Tip: You can use the key to help spread the graphite inside the lock.

The Lock Has Seized Up

If you can put the key in the lock but cannot to turn it, the lock may have seized because dirt or grime has gotten caught in the mechanism. To clean the lock mechanism, insert a damp cotton bud into the keyhole and joggle it around to attract the dirt. Next, the lock needs to be lubricated. Never use oil for this task. Instead, choose a purpose-made graphite or silicone spray with a directional nozzle. When you have applied the spray to the keyhole, insert the key and wiggle it in the lock to distribute the lubricant evenly.

Out of Alignment

The bolt and the strike plate may be out of alignment. One possible culprit of this could be the weather stripping on the door. If this is the case, you will need to move the weather stripping so it doesn’t affect the alignment of the bold and the strike plate. The strike plate may also be in the wrong spot.

The Lock Could Be Frozen

We don’t really have this problem in California but some places do get really could and the lock could actually freeze. An easy trick to fix this is to heat up the key and stick it into the lock.

The Key or Doorknob is Turning But The Bolt Doesn’t Move

When you face this problem it has to do with the lock mechanism. In fact, you will have to completely remove the lock and take a closer look to see if any of the parts are worn or completely missing. If you are some what familiar with locks and you see the problem, great! If not, you may need to just buy a new lock. Most indoor locks are fairly inexpensive.

If your particular lock is a high security lock and you don’t want to buy a new one, feel free to call our locksmith to come out and help you repair your lock.
